Mundialito

The Mundialito is a competition for the immigrant population of Madrid. It is organised by the Football Federation and the Local Government in Madrid with the principal sponsor La Caixa, a Spanish bank.
It is played in June and July and most of the countries taking part are from South America, Africa and East Europe. Great Britain first entered in 2005, the initial tournament having started 3 years prior to this.
Football Club Britanico have the honour of representing the British although 5 non Brits are permitted in a squad of 22 players. Some of the countries are able to call on experienced ex professionals, young players looking to become fully paid and players in other parts of Spain.

2010

In the 2010 Mundialito Reino Unido got off to a flying start against China with an 8-0 victory (see match report). Check out the official tournament website here.

The game against Brazil was a 2-2 (see match report) draw after a spirited performance after going down to 10 men. The final game was a 0-5 defeat at the hands of Angola after going down to 10 men after just 4 minutes. The team was unlucky not to qualify, and the table is by no means a fair reflection of the quality of the performances, and with the news that Angola were later disqualified from the tournament, due to irregularities, not qualifying was even harder to accept.

2009

This year proved to be a big improvement on previous tournaments with Reino Unido topping the group. First with a 2-1win over Honduras, with goals from Simon Bigwood and Alisdair Clarke, then a total 7-0 destruction of Germany, and a well fought 1-1 draw against Guinea Conakry, again Clarke getting on the score sheet. A tough quarter final game against Uruguay was to follow, and suspensions, injuries and holidays meant a squad of only 12 would be available. Uruguay won 5-3, after Reino Unido were 3-1 up at one point.

2008

Perhaps with so much football during the season the Annual Mundialito proved just too much and the club lost all three matches despite a couple of close matches with Uruguay and Ivory Coast. The heavy defeat in the last game to Senegal probably suggested it was just one game too many in a long, tiring and successful season. However enjoyment and being fit are also part of the game…..just ask Gary Weir and Dave Pugh who played for all three teams this season and must have played over 100 games between them.
 
As part of the day, Rob was interviewed by Radio Cope last night at 7.30, Stuart was involved in political debate with Doña Esperanza and a football discussion with Jose Santamaria, Real Madrid´s Center back of the 50´s and 60´s with 3 European Cups to his name.

2007
Great Britain finally won their first game of the Mundialito when they defeated Angola whose original delegado Jorge Mendoza was one of the pioneers of the event in the early days. Players in the British side had sunk to their knees at the final whistle of the first game when virtually with the last kick of the game Chile won 2-1.

2006
For the second year in succession Great Britain were drawn in the “group of death” along with Bolivia, Senegal and Morocco.
A goal 5 minutes from time against Bolivia in their first match meant that qualification for the knock out stages would be difficult.

2005
Britanicos were drawn in a very strong section with Romania, winners of the first tournament and Ecuador who went onto win in it 2005.

Lección a los 'profes' y jaque del mate uruguayo

Rumanía golea a los británicos y Uruguay impone su clase.

"Levántate!¡No se engaña!" A Gary, capitán de Gran Bretaña y telefonista de profesión, le salió del alma toda la tradición inglesa cuando un delantero rumano se tiró en el área. Pero esta lección de juego limpio es la única que dio el equipo británico, compuesto en su mayoría por profesores de inglés. Las guerras son cosas de los políticos, los ciudadanos prefieren tomarse una cerveza con unas olivas tras un partido de fútbol. Aunque seas argentino y para disfrutar del balón -y la cebada- tengas que defender a Gran Bretaña. La Guerra de Las Malvinas enfrentó hace 23 años al ejército de Videla con el inglés. Murieron unas mil personas. Pero hay un argentino que lucha cada fin de semana para que Gran Bretaña venza sobre una cancha de fútbol.

Sebastián Blasco, empleado en un banco inglés, nació hace 29 años en la tierra del tango, pero en el III Mundialito defiende los intereses del Reino Unido. Y sus sentimientos, sus motivos, sus opiniones forman un nudo que sólo pueden desentrañar los que disfrutan con el fútbol. Con la sonrisa del que se sabe distinto, un ultrasur en medio del Frente Atlético, dice que si jugara en la selección argentina le "encantaría ganar a Inglaterra, no hay nada peor que perder contra un inglés". Pero afirma con contundencia que si el Mundialito le cruzara con sus compatriotas " trataría de vencerles. Cuando juego con Gran Bretaña sólo tengo presente que quiero ganar y mis diez compañeros también".

¿Contradicción? No, pasión por el fútbol. Quiere jugar y le da igual que sea con Gran Bretaña porque la guerra no le sembró odio, sólo "el dolor de saber que aquello no tuvo ningún sentido". Nadie le puede acusar de mal patriota porque afirma con rotundidad que las islas que motivaron el enfrentamiento pertenecen a Argentina y, que si fuera profesional, "no disputaría un Mundial para otro país que no fuera el mío".
Lo único que le pesó a la hora de decidirse fueron las posibles patadas que recibiría en caso de medirse a la albiceleste. "¡No pediría ni un balón en castellano!", ríe. Pero eso ya no es problema, porque la victoria de ayer de Ecuador supone el adiós de los británicos al torneo. Argentina ya tiene un hincha más.
